The Scotland Road Free School was started by John Ord and Bill Murphy in the early 1970s when the “free schooling / de-schooling “ ideology was at it’s height. It ran from 1971-1974.
It was establish as "a school run by children, parents and teachers together, without a headmaster, centralised authority or the usual hierarchies. It would be open when it was needed and lessons would be optional". …… "The school will be a community school...totally involved with its environment.....the vanguard of social change".

The Storefront was an educational project founded in 1966 by the poet Ned O'Gorman. He took over an empty shop on 126th Street in Harlem, New York City in the1970's. It provided breakfast, lunch, and medical care to the local area and aimed to open children's eyes to new oportunities. In the years to come Ned's solo dream grew into an elementary school.
