11 imagesTottenham High Street police station was closed when friends and family of Mark Duggan gathered outside on the pavement for a vigil protesting the outcome of last week’s inquest into his death in 2011. The jury came up with the verdict that he had been “lawfully killed by the police”. The jury was not blamed for the outcome as it was felt that they had not been given enough information/evidence on which to base their decision. The same feelings surround the other ‘death in custody’ cases. There have been 1,476 deaths since 1970 and not one conviction. “To keep Mark's name alive we are not going away. We are not going to fight with violence, but there is a struggle that we are going to go through for as many years as it takes to get justice and try and give Mark's children a future. We are not going to be swept under the carpet." The crowd chanted: “No Justice , No Peace” At the end of the vigil 20 doves were released as symbol of hope

42 imagesThe Egyptian crisis is escalating. On January 24th Mohammad Morsi was “democratically” elected as President of Egypt. On July 1st he was ousting by General Sisi and the army. The “military coup” (which the Americans insist “was not a coup”) has resulted in increasing violence with hundreds of protesters injured and killed. On Sunday, supporters of President Morsi gathered outside Downing Street to demand an end to the bloodshed. The Muslim Brotherhood to which Morsi belongs has been declared a terrorist group by the military regime currently in power and has been heavily targeted. The protest on Sunday was peaceful but emotionally charged. The gesture with 4 fingers raised and the thumb resting on the palm is the “Rabia sign” which has come to represent the pro-Morsi movement. Rabia in Arabic means “4” referring to the deposed leader as the fourth president of Egypt after Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak. Rabaa al-Adawiya Square is also where the recent atrocities took place and therefore the symbol distinguishes the movement from the coup supporters of Tahrir Square . The situation, complicated by all the knitted local and international interests, is near impossible to untangle and understand but there can be little doubt about the horrors of the ongoing bloodshed.

42 imagesFifteen thousand Sikhs from all over the UK joined together in London on Sunday to remember the 1984 massacre in the Amritsar Golden Temple in Punjab and to call for the formation of an independent Sikh state of Khalistan. In 1984 there was growing tension between the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Sikhs in the northern state of Punjab. The Sikhs felt discriminated against by the Hindu majority. On 6th June, the Indian army attacked the Golden Temple with heavy artillery and tanks. This was timed to coincide with an important Sikh celebration and thousands of pilgrims were inside the Temple complex. The storming of the Sikhs' holiest shrine started months of attacks and retaliations which left thousands dead and many more thousands homeless. Eventually this ended with Indira Gandhi being assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards. Last Sunday there was a dignified march through central London led by five High Priests with ceremonial swords. It ended with a rally on the Victoria embankment where there were many moving and powerful speeches asking the Indian government to accept accountability for the massacre, and calling for the Sikhs' right to self-determination in their own home state, Khalistan.

19 imagesOn Saturday BARAC (Black Activists Against Cuts) led a march through central London against global racism and injustice. The march was held in solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin and the many others who have been directly affected by racism both in the UK and the USA. The recent acquittal in the USA of George Zimmerman who in 2012 shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17 yr old African American student, has fuelled anger and highlighted the continuing importance of the civil rights movement. Zimmerman, 29, said he opened fire on the teenager in self-defence. Last week he was acquitted of murder by a Florida court under the 'Stand Your Ground' law. After hearing the results of the trial President Obama made a speech at a White House press briefing saying that very few black men in the US had not experienced racial profiling and that African Americans were also keenly aware of racial disparities in the application of criminal laws. "That all contributes to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different. "You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago. And when you think about why, in the African American community at least, there's a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it's important to recognise that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that – that doesn't go away." "There are very few African-American men who haven't had the experience of being followed in a department store. That includes me. There are very few African-American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. There are very few African-Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she has a chance to get off." This August marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s march on Washington. Where does his dream stand today?

32 imagesA silent procession made its way down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square in memory of the 3180 people who have died in suspicious circumstance while in custody since 1969. This number is steadily growing each year. This was the 14th annual march and remembrance organised by United Families & Friends Campaign (UFFC), a coalition of families and friends of those that have died in the custody of police and prison officers as well as those who died in psychiatric and immigration detention. Outside Downing Street the speakers related details of how their family members had died and demanded justice for all those who had been killed through negligence. The stories were shocking and a terrible indictment on the police and the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Their demands are for thorough, transparent and independent investigation into these deaths and an end to police violence and immunity from prosecution. While most of the families were black, the speakers however emphasized that it was not necessarily an issue of race but rather one of class. Many police officers seem to feel that they can treat some of those in detention however they like and can literally got away with murder. In all these cases not a single officer has ever been convicted.

37 imagesSlutwalk is an annual international protest combating the attitude that women are somehow to blame for rape and "should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised." Over 1000 women marched through central London on Saturday. It is an unusual method of drawing attention to women's right to their own bodies and their frequent victimization in cases of rape. It does, however, draw public attention to the issues and attitudes surrounding rape and stimulate discussions on feminism.

-
13 imagesOn Saturday a small but deeply concerned group held a London Solidarity Protest outside the U.S. Embassy calling for a proper investigation into the murder of 17 yr old Trayvon Martin in Florida. Trayvon was returning to his father's home having bought a bag of skittles and a soft drink from the local shop when he was shot dead by George Zimmerman a self appointed neighbourhood watchman. Zimmerman called 999 and said that he saw a black teenager wearing a hoody walking in his neighbourhood and felt he was "up to no good". The police told him to wait and not to follow him. However, by the time the police arrived Trayvon was dead. Zimmerman admitted the killing but claimed self-defence and was released without charge. The incident has opened up disturbing issues on the state of race relations in Britain as well as America. Impassioned speeches were made by families of young men killed in police custody in the UK.

17 imagesThe United Families and Friends Campaign (UFFC) is a coalition of families and friends of those that have died in suspicious circumstances whilst in police custody, prisons or secure psychiatric hospitals. On Saturday they held a silent procession down Whitehall to Downing Street to hand in a letter demanding a public inquiry into their cases. Since 1969 there have been 3,180 individuals who have died in custody. Calling for justice and for properly independent investigations into the deaths, the families went on to recount the shocking and tragic stories surrounding the deaths of their family members. Those responsible have seldom been brought to justice or even reprimanded for their actions. Where investigations have been held, they have been seen largely as ineffectual or designed to cover up offences committed by police and prison officers. Among those present were the family of Sean Rigg, who died in police custody in Brixton Police Station on Thursday 21 August 2008, and Ricky Bishop who died in the same police station after being arrested during "Operation Clean Sweep" on November 22, 2001. The remembrance ended with lines of TSG police moving in and kettling the group, dragging Ricky Bishops mother across the street.

17 imagesDespite the Home Secretary's ban on marches in Tower Hamlets, up to 1,500 members of the far right "English Defence League" (EDL) assembled near Aldgate for a "static" protest. Police officers from all over the UK were drafted in to contain the anti-Muslim demonstration which was a potential threat to the East London Mosque and the Muslim Community of East London. Police officers managed to contain the group and prevent clashes with the UAF (Unite against Fascism) group who had assembled about ¼ mile away. After several hours of racist chanting and the throwing of bricks, bottles and fireworks at police lines they were eventually herded out of the area.

19 imagesSlutwalk, an anti-rape campaign, had a turnout of thousands who march through Central London fighting for the rights of women to dress as they please without being accused of provoking sexual violence. The movement which began in Canada when a policeman told a group of law students that in order to avoid sexual violence "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized". As a reaction women decided to reclaim the word "slut". They wanted to make it clear that the job of the police to protect the people on the street and arrest the criminals not blame the victims. "Yes, means yes" and "no, means no" "Sex should be a mater of consent" "Rape and sexual violence are never acceptable"

14 imagesAround 25,000 Sikhs marched to Trafalgar Square commemorating the 1984 massacre and attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, north India. The Indian armed forces used 100, 000 troops to stormed the holiest Sikh shrine and attacked the temple complex. There were only 251 Sikhs inside. Operation Bluestar, had been personally approved by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with the aim to flush out militants who wanted an independent homeland of Khalistan. There has never been agreement on the numbers killed, but Sikhs say thousands were massacred by the Indian troops. Mrs Gandhi was assassinated four months later by her Sikh bodyguards. Following her death anti-Sikh rioting erupted in India which left about 3,000 Sikhs dead.

13 imagesSupporters of Laurent Ghagbo, former President of the Ivory Coast, demonstrated in front of Downing street protesting the involvement of France and the UN in the leadership struggles over the past months. Alassane Ouattara won the November 2010 presidential election but was prevented from taking office after Laurent Gbagbo refused to give up power. Both men declared themselves the winner of the polls. Months of political unrest and violence followed. An unknow number of civilians were killded and more than 200,000 people fled from their homes in western Ivory Coast. In April , Mr Gbagbo was arrested after a military raid on the presidential compound where he had based himself. He and the former first lady were put under house arrest awaiting trial,. In May 2011, Alassane Ouattara was finally inaugurated as the president of Ivory Coast. The Ivorian supporters of Gbagbo claim that he has been the victim of an imperialist plot and accuse President Sarkozy of France and the UN of backing the military coup in order to take control of the African state's resources.

44 imagesOn the day that the government voted for 3x increase in student education tuition fees, a group of 20, 000 students march through central London to Westminster where they were quickly kettled (contained) into Parliament Square by TSG riot police. With no room to move, the fencing protecting the green was rapidly torn down by angry protesters who felt very betrayed by the lib Dems. As the day progressed, anger, high spirits and testosterone created a volatile atmosphere with overreaction from both the students and the police. Small fires were lit with burning placards, metal fences transported above the crowd, smoke bombs, fireworks, and many attempts to push through lines of baton wielding riot police who blocked all exits. As the night closed in the windows of the Treasury were systematically smashed. For some reason there seemed no attempt to prevent this vandalism which did the student cause no good. The day ended 45 students and a hand full police injured. There were many arrests and one youth with severe head injuries from a truncheon. Altogether a full on, confusing and extremely violent day with my camera.

Arriving at Whitehall they were immediately kettled (contained) by police and unable to leave the area for the next 9 hours. An old police van with no treads was driven into the crowd and abandoned. 126 imagesGreenham Common Women’s Peace Camp in Berkshire England was initially established in 1981 as a protest against nuclear missiles being sited at the RAF base and remained active until the last missile left in 1991. These photographs were taken in 1983 and1984. Some of the women had lived there continually while others would arrive for months, days or weeks at a time. Living in very basic makeshift dwellings/benders alongside the perimeter fence, the women had created an alternative and creative existence. Through the barbed wire fencing, soldiers perched on lookout towers observed their every move. On 11 December 1983, there was a massive protest against the cruise missiles which had arrived three weeks earlier. Fifty thousand women circled the base. During a silent vigil, women held up mirrors to symbolically let the base look back at itself and its actions. By the end of the day there were hundreds of arrests as the women pulled down large sections of the fence. On 4 April 1984, the entire camp was evicted and the makeshift dwellings dismantled. However, once again they returned to reform the camp. According to David Cortright (2008. Peace: A History of Movements and Ideas, Cambridge University Press) the media attention surrounding the camp "prompted the creation of other peace camps at more than a dozen sites in Britain and elsewhere in Europe". 42 imagesToday's Occupy Movement has made me revisit my early photographs from the 1969 "People's Park" Occupation and subsequent riots in Berkeley California. Retrospectively, it can been seen as one of the first Occupy Movements and is remembered as a symbol of hope for the free-thinkers; a rare political victory for the ordinary person against the corporate State. The occupation began in June 1969 when students and local people of Berkeley, inspired by the Free Speech and Anti-Authoritarian movements and angered by the Vietnam War, took their initiative and occupied a piece of land belonging to the state owned University of California in Berkeley. The University had purchased the land in 1966. They demolished residential housing and planned to build a car park and student dorms. They ran out of money however and left the land vacant for two years while committees dithered about its future use. It became a dumping ground and an eyesore to the local community. Students and local people drew up their own plans for turning the derelict land into a much needed park and open space for the people. Their own committee approved the plans but the University stalled. Tired of waiting for yet more delays, assessments and permissions, the people took action. Hundreds turned up to occupy and work on the land. Contributions of money, food, shrubs, playground equipment etc. were donated by local shops. On the derelict site there was non-stop clearing, digging and planting and free food was available for all. The park was alive with rebellion, energy and hope. The University was taking a relatively soft line and promised the Park Committee that they would give them 3 weeks to pull together a detailed proposal for the future of the land. However, one week later, Ronald Reagan who was then the governor of California stepped in. On his election in 1966, he had promised to clamp down on student protests and anti-war demonstrators. He called the Berkeley campus "a haven for communist sympathizers, protesters and sex deviants." He considered the creation of the park a direct leftist challenge to the property rights of the university, and took it as an opportunity to fulfill his campaign promise. (This hard line taken against the protesters ended up contributing to his Presidential election a few years later.) At 4AM on what became known as "Bloody Thursday", 250 Highway patrol and Berkeley police officers took over the park. They cleared an 8 block area around the site and began constructing an 8 ft. high perimeter fence. About 6,000 protesters turned up that day. Anger grew and the police retaliated with tear gas and shotguns. James Rector (a bystander)was killed, another man was blinded and 123 people were hospitalised. By the evening Governor Reagan had called in the National Guard and banned public assembly. The town was completely taken over by soldiers with bayonets. 30 imagesThese photographs were taken in California in 1969, when The Black Panther Party was being heavily targeted by the police and the FBI. The Panthers emerged from the Black Power Movement in 1966. Founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, they formed an organization of militant blacks committed to improving social conditions and instilling racial pride in their communities. TO VIEW: PLEASE PRESS "ALL" below Inspired by Malcolm X and influenced by Mau Zedong and Che Guevara, the Black Panther Party aimed to protect communities through self-defence and to end racism and police brutality. They denounced the Civil Rights Movement and urged blacks to engage in armed confrontation with the police in order to accelerate the revolutionary struggle. Arguing that only violent revolution could eliminate racism and oppression, they alarmed white Americans by patrolling the streets with shot-guns. In 1967 Huey Newton was wounded during a shootout with police. While in the hospital he was charged with killing a policeman and sentenced to prison. Following this incident most of the BPP leadership was on the run from law enforcement officials. Between 1967 and 1971 more than 300 Panthers were jailed, forced into hiding, or killed. The FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, described the Panthers as "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country". In November 1968 he ordered the FBI to employ "hard-hitting counter-intelligence measures to cripple the Black Panthers". Over a six years period, 24 Panthers were killed in gun fights with the police. Some of the more notable members were Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Kathleen Cleaver, Angela Davis , David Hilliard, and Fred Hampton.
