Vigil for Mark Duggan: the shooting that triggered the riots11.01.14 11 images Created 13 Jan 2014
Tottenham High Street police station was closed when friends and family of Mark Duggan gathered outside on the pavement for a vigil protesting the outcome of last week’s inquest into his death in 2011. The jury came up with the verdict that he had been “lawfully killed by the police”.
The jury was not blamed for the outcome as it was felt that they had not been given enough information/evidence on which to base their decision. The same feelings surround the other ‘death in custody’ cases. There have been 1,476 deaths since 1970 and not one conviction.
“To keep Mark's name alive we are not going away. We are not going to fight with violence, but there is a struggle that we are going to go through for as many years as it takes to get justice and try and give Mark's children a future. We are not going to be swept under the carpet."
The crowd chanted: “No Justice , No Peace”
At the end of the vigil 20 doves were released as symbol of hope
