To release molten iron and slage the furnace plug is drilled half way and the remainder burnt out with an oxygen lance. A river of iron rushes out and starts journey to the ladle. Shelton Bar Iron and Steel Works in Stoke on Trent in the 1978 just before it was closed down with loss of 2,500 jobs
