  • Bilston Steelworks Open Hearth furnace in the Black Country West Midlands in the 1978. The open hearth furnaces were charged with scrap metal using a Wellman Open Hearth Furnace charging machine. Four of these were used on a stretch of standard track running along the front of the furnace's. The old furnace'sB,C,and E were fitted with 5 doors and the new G,H,F consisted of 3.

  • Elizaberh Furnace, Bilston Iron and Steel works, Wolverhampton, West Midlands in 1978.The furnace was constructed in 1953 &1954 to replace 3 existing blast furnaces on the site.It was named after Elizabeth Margaret Steward, the daughter of the owner of the company.It was the most advanced furnace of its kind in the UK and could produce 275,00-325,000 tons of iron per year.Due to increasing stock levels of iron across British Steel Corporation it was mothballed for 6 months in 1977. It never worked again and was demolished in 1980.

  • The Melting Shop at Bilston Steelworks in the Black Country West Midlands in the 1978. Samples were taken throughout the steelmaking process and sent to the works Chemical Laboratory for analysis to determine the composition of the steel.

  • Bilston Steelworks Oin The Black Country West Midlands in the 1978. When tapping was complete the ladle of steel was taken by an overhead crane to the adjacent casting bay. Here the ladle of steel was positioned above a train of empty ingots moulds. The moulds were filled with molten steel to form ingots. This process was called Teeming and was controlled by workers situated on a platform running the whole length of the casting bay.

  • My father Leonard Kinsey furnace dismantler and bricklayer (1973-79). The life span of an open hearth furnace was aprox.18 week. after the furnace was taken off production and the entire brickwork replaced. The container was sent directly to the chemical Laboratory using a high Power tube transfer system. The analysis of the sample could be carried out in a matter of minutes, to see if the steel was at the required composition. When the correct composition was attained the furnace was ready for tapping.
